If you've ever been to southern Nevada, you know that once you leave Las Vegas, there is pretty much nothing but valleys of dirt surrounded by mountains of dirt. Actually, the mountains are quite beautiful when the sun starts sinking down and varying shades of purple overcome them. Geologically speaking, the Mojave Desert is fascinating; and if you're in to old mining history (which I am) well, the Silver State is quite the happening place!
We drove a 275 mile round trip today passing the Nevada Test Site to Beatty, NV, near the south entrance of Area 51. (The guys with guns at the gate did not welcome us) After a short visit in Beatty, we turned south again and went to the Death Valley junction at Amargosa. The day was running out so we turned east to Pahrump. Yeah, good old Pahrump; soon to be Heidi Fleiss' backyard.
Here are a few pictures from this area...
Miles and miles of dirt
Just us and an occasional low-flying UFO

The 'Bottle' House in Ryolite; A mining/ghost town a few miles south of Beatty that used to be home to 10,000 people.
